The original covers back side featured Andy McCoys then girlfriend Annas naked breasts painted blue and red with 'Hanoi Roxx' written across it. That the band was able to carry this momentum into a deal with CBS Records says enough about what `Back to Mystery City’ had in terms of success. In 1982 Hanoi Rocks recorded and released their second studio album Oriental Beat in London. “Until I Get You” is a great ballad and much of the second half of the record is slower which is fine but maybe not as memorable. I think `Mystery City’ is as good as any of Hanoi Rocks’ discs with such cuts as blistering opener “Malibu Beach Nightmare”, the title track and “Tooting Bec Wreck” these are as good as any songs in the catalog. On `Back to Mystery City’, former Mott members Buffin and Overend were on hand as producers for their Scandinavian acolytes. carved their own mark on the early to mid-eighties rock world. In interviews the band have said that they were not crazy about the production on `Oriental Beat' but I don't really see much of a difference from "Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes" in terms of overall sound quality although the former has more of Michael Monroe's sax playing but that might be a sign of the growing confidence in the young front man's abilities. Oriental Beat also opened markets in the UK and Japan, where Hanoi eventually became very popular. Whilst the band doubtless have their own fanatical following, and the reunion show last year, along with Michael Monroe’s high-octane solo sets, still have the power to thrill, modern listeners to Oriental Beat may find it a bit of a Curate’s Egg in that it’s good in places. The title track sort of spells out the band's philosophy and it perfectly sums up the exotic qualities that the name Hanoi Rocks conjures up. "Motorvatin'" gets the LP going in fine fashion and "Don't Follow Me", which follows it, are two of the finest songs in this or any Hanoi Rocks collection.
